| I became involved with Come-See-Me many, many, many…many years ago, back when Hector was a pup, and my memory is not as
good as it once was. But I do remember when I first became involved how in awe I was of this great machinery called Come-See-Me, and in particular the Beyond the Call of Glen Award winners. Talk about a list of Who’s Who!! It included, of course, Icky Albright in whose honor the award is now given, other captains of industry, local community-minded companies,
visionary leaders, and some consummate volunteers. These winners were honored, not for just being involved, but for being involved over…and over…and over again. The Come-See-Me Board’s guidelines say that the “Beyond the Call of Glen Award” is the organization’s highest selected award – in fact, a lifetime achievement award so special that it is not always given
each year.
Well, this year we do have a winner and they could not exemplify those credentials any more. They have served as Team Leaders, as Board members, as event coordinators, as garbage men, as “lost & found,” as traffic controllers, and a multitude of other jobs. In my opinion, they have acted like a gracious Southern hostess, opening her home to visitors, working
diligently to make it all look effortless. Isn’t that welcoming what Come-See-Me is all about? They have “been there” for all of us - Event Chairs, Team Leaders, Festival Chairs, Board Chairs and the general public. In fact, let’s put a face on this year’s winner:
Michael Bush, Scott Finn, Charlie McDonald, Dan Murray, Tom Hickman (in absentia) and Mike Drummond (in absentia)
While Come-See-Me has its roots in Glencairn and our private gardens, its participants have claimed the Winthrop Farm and Coliseum area as one of its main locations. Through foot races, bike rides, music events, and many a
Tailgate Party and fireworks display, these folks have provided a wonderful site, bathrooms, power, shelter during rainstorms - you name it, they’ve done it. Icky Albright would indeed be very proud of these folks! They have truly gone BEYOND THE CALL OF GLEN. So, to the Winthrop University Athletic Department, this frog’s for you!! Dan, since Athletic Director
Tom Hickman could not be here today, will you accept on behalf of the Athletic Dept.?
